As part of the modernisation and internationalisation of its educational services in the field of music and other performing arts, and, thanks to the support of
the Schwarz Foundation, the Athens Conservatory adopted the idea of creating special infrastructures dedicated to ‘distance learning’. The original idea consisted of the adaptation and equipment of selected venues in the Athens Conservatory building in the centre of Athens with appropriate state of the art technology
for the purpose of conducting educational or cultural events in which participants can be located in different cities, different countries and even different conti- nents. A hall of the conservatory is now equipped to host one-on-one lessons, public seminars and masterclasses, lectures, orchestral and choir coaching sessions, technical workshops, joint rehearsals, seminars and many other types of international real-time events.
The implementation of this ambitious idea was entrusted to architect Ivy Nanopoulou and her team, including engineer. Yannis Ladopoulos and some of the technologically most experienced educational institutions in the world were consulted, such as the Manhattan School of Music, New York. The spacious central Distance Learning Studio, named after the Schwarz Foundation, is located on the first floor of the Athens Conservatory, along with all necessary high-tech central equipment that connects the entire system with the internet. The central Distance Learning Studio is progressively connected with different spaces and venues, such as the Black Box Studio of the Athens Conservatoire School of Drama, the Aris Garoufalis Concert Hall, the future Athens Conservatory Amphitheatre as well as the new Athens Conservatory Technology Labs.
