The Schwarz Foundation, in partnership with the Gennadius Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens, is delighted to announce the 9th consecutive season of the renowned Nights of Classical Music at the Gennadius Library at Cotsen Hall, the auditorium of the ASCSA.
This event, running from the 29th of September to the 1st of October 2023, welcomes the return of Curtis on Tour, The Nina von Maltzahn Global Touring Initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music. Curtis on Tour, the global touring arm of the Curtis Institute of Music, returns to Athens, Greece, to captivate audiences with an enchanting chamber music festival, a tradition upheld since 2015. This highly anticipated tour features accomplished Curtis Institute of Music alumni, esteemed for their contributions to the classical music realm.
Adding to the excitement of this year's tour is the world premiere of "Two Fantasies," a captivating string trio composed by Curtis alumnus Michael Djupstrom (Composition '11). This composition has been specially commissioned by the Curtis Institute of Music exclusively for this tour.
Distinguished Curtis alumni, including Dennis Chmelensky, Maria Ioudenitch, Emma Meinrenken, Haesue Lee, Grace Takeda, Jean Kim, Joshua Halpern, and Pallavi Mahidhara, will collaborate to deliver three sensational concerts.
The European leg of Curtis on Tour's journey will continue from Athens, with scheduled performances in prestigious venues including Konzerthaus Berlin (Germany), Salone Dugentesco, and Verceil (Italy) in October.
For more than 10 years, Curtis on Tour artists and ensembles have delighted audiences around the globe with performances that are “exhilarating from beginning to end” (The Washington Post). “One of the world’s finest music academies” (BBC Culture), the Curtis Institute of Music pairs tradition and innovation, educating exceptionally gifted young musicians as artist-citizens who engage a local and global community through music-making of the highest caliber. Since August 2015 and in collaboration with the Schwarz Foundation, the Gennadius Library has hosted a series of four concerts of the famous Curtis Institute of Music that enliven the city’s cultural landscape at the beginning of autumn.
- The Curtis Institute of Music educates and trains exceptionally gifted young musicians to engage a local and global community through the highest level of artistry. For nearly a century Curtis has provided each member of its small student body with an unparalleled education alongside musical peers, distinguished by a “learn by doing” philosophy and personalized attention from a faculty that includes a high proportion of actively performing musicians. To ensure that admissions are based solely on artistic promise, Curtis makes an investment in each admitted student so that no tuition is charged for their studies. Curtis students hone their craft through more than 200 orchestra, opera, and solo and chamber music offerings each year and programs that bring arts access and education to the community.
